How We Build Every Tee

Small-Batch. Workshop-Made. Never Mass-Produced.

At Riptides and Ridgelines, every shirt starts the same way all great gear does — in the workshop, not the warehouse.
We don’t mass-produce, we don’t stockpile, and we don’t take shortcuts.
Every tee is crafted one at a time, made only when you order it.

This isn’t fast fashion.
This is slow-built American craft, forged with intent.

STEP 1 — The Blank Tee: Ultra-Soft Tri-Blend

We begin with a premium 4 oz tri-blend blank — lightweight, breathable, vintage-soft from day one.
Every tee is:

  • 50/25/25 poly/cotton/rayon
  • side-seamed
  • rib-collared
  • taped at the neck and shoulders
  • dyed using OEKO-TEX certified, low-impact dyes
  • built to survive sweat, saltwater, ridgelines, campfires, and the wash

This is the foundation — the canvas your story gets printed on.

STEP 2 — Pretreatment: The Invisible Step Nobody Talks About

Unlike DTF or vinyl transfers, direct to garment printing requires pretreating the shirt — a step most people never see.

We pretreat every shirt by hand, both front and back, to ensure:

  • deep color absorption
  • razor-sharp linework
  • breathability
  • zero cracking
  • zero peeling
  • smooth, soft touch

It’s messy, it’s slow, and it’s the reason our prints feel like they’re part of the shirt — not sitting on top of it.

STEP 3 — Drying & Curing

After pretreat, the shirt is hung on our workshop racks to dry.
This step can’t be rushed — the fibers need to settle and cure before the ink ever touches them.  Most companies "aid [rush]" this drying process by heat pressing the shirts, while they're still saturated, until they fully dry.  This, however, can leave them looking shiny and feeling like cardboard.  That's why we allow our pretreated shirts to fully airdry, before we ever touch them again.  Does it take significantly longer?  WTF do you think?    

This is where that “broken-in vintage feel” starts to happen.

It’s the difference between an artisan process and mass-production speed.

STEP 4 — The Print: Ink Fused Into the Fabric

We print each design one at a time using a printer designed specifically to print on fabric.  Yes - just like your paper printer.  

Unlike plastic heat transfers, our ink:

  • soaks into the fibers
  • moves with the shirt
  • breathes like cotton
  • ages like a tattoo
  • never cracks or peels
  • stays soft for the life of the shirt

This is where the tee becomes Riptides and Ridgelines gear.

STEP 5 — Heat Pressing & Final Cure

Once printed, each shirt is cured under high heat to lock the ink into the tri-blend fibers.

This is the step that makes the print:

  • durable
  • Soft AF
  • stretch-resistant
  • sweat-proof
  • long-lasting as hell

STEP 6 — Inspection, Folding, and Packing

Before any R/R tee ships, it gets a full inspection:

  • print consistency
  • fiber fill
  • texture
  • alignment
  • color accuracy
  • stitching
  • softness

Only then is it folded, bagged, and shipped out of our small Midwestern workshop — made to order, made with intention, and made to outlast the trends.

WHY WE DO IT THIS WAY
