HOW TO BUILD A VIKING LONGSHIP

9th Century Method

1. Keel Selection and Shaping

Select a tall, straight oak tree, at least 200 years old.

Fell it clean and split it along the grain.

Shape the keel into a long, shallow curve using a broad axe.

Ensure symmetry for proper tracking through water.

2. Ribs (Frames)

Gather naturally curved hardwood (elm, hazel, ash).

Soak in water for days.

Steam over fire using wet leather wrap.

Bend over a form and let dry in place.

Discard any that crack or warp.

3. Hull Planks

Use straight oak logs.

Split into planks with wedges, not saws, to preserve grain strength.

Shape with drawknife to uniform thickness.

Lay in clinker style (overlapping edges).

Fasten with iron rivets and roves.

4. Caulking

Twist sheep’s wool into strands.

Soak in heated pine tar mixed with powdered bone or moss.

Press into seams between planks with a caulking iron.

Heat and seal with additional tar as needed.

5. Mast and Sail

Carve mast from spruce or pine.

Mount in a mortised mast step fixed to the keel.

Use linen or wool sail, square cut, reinforced with leather corners.

Rig with rawhide or hemp rope, lashed with wooden blocks and toggles.

6. Deck and Oar System

Add removable decking planks between ribs.

Drill oar ports along both sides.

Fit oars of equal length, balanced for leverage.

7. Steering

Attach steering board (rudder) to starboard side near stern.

Use strong curved wood, bound with iron and rope.

Control with a tiller connected to the top.

8. Figurehead and Finish

Carve a wooden figurehead (beast or shield motif).

Mount on prow for identity and intimidation.

Coat entire hull with pine tar for waterproofing and preservation.

9. Launch and Sea Trial

Slide into water with rollers or greased logs.

Test for leaks, balance, and sail performance.

Adjust ballast and caulking as needed.

10. Naming and Blessing

Name the vessel before first voyage.

Pour mead or blood on the bow for tradition.

Mark name inside the hull or under mast step.
