The nautical phrase, "hold fast", gets its roots from the Dutch phrase "houd vast", which simply translates to "hold tight".  Thought to allow superstitious sailors to maintain a tight grip on the ship's riggings, it can also be argued that because it's tattooed across the knuckles in a way that an individual standing across from its bearer can read it, it is also a way to tell your shipmates not to let that rope go!  No matter what your viewpoint is, it represents standing strong, holding tight and not letting go.  You've got this shit!  Now buy the shirt, so you can show everybody.
